Born in a suburb of Vienna, Austria, Karl Bitter was trained as a sculptor at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, from 1885 to 1888. After active service in the Army, Bitter immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City in November of 1889.
